On May 18, 2008, the twentieth anniversary of the death of Enzo Tortora, the association Bologna Multimedia Video held a celebratory conference. The chosen site, Naples, recalls the sad story of the case of the famous journalist, who was accused by a "repentant" Mauro Melluso, of having links with the Camorra. I was asked an intervention on the process Contrada, given the structural similarities between the two events, namely the exclusive basis of the charges on the statements of "regret" the analogy is in the innocence of the two other defendants, already proven to Tortora the trial papers, that of Contrada waiting to be finally revealed by history. That might be the only judge capable of sentencing in an objective manner.

The conference was attended by distinguished lawyers and jurists as Giuliano Pisapia, one of the fathers of the new Code of Criminal Procedure, the lawyer Raffaele Della Valle, one of the defenders of Tortora, the lawyer John Dedola, defender ' ex-Health Minister Sirchia and Giovanni Consorte, as well as lawyer Francis Caia, president of the Bar Association of Naples, President of the Provincial Council of Campania, Sandra Lonardo, already involved in legal proceedings, and the company of Dove, Francesca Scopelliti. The intervention of the President Emeritus of the Republic Francesco Cossiga, who was unable to attend in person, as he promised, for health reasons, was recorded in the form of interview. A man to whom I, in 1999, I felt the pleasure and honor to dedicate (to him and Enzo Tortora) my thesis in law. A degree that I put in the drawer: I did neither the lawyer nor any other activity on my degree. But my thesis is on the principle of presumption of innocence. At the beginning of it I wanted to write this small dedication: "To Bruno Contrada and Enzo Tortora, where the art. 27 paragraph 2 of the Constitution was only an opinion. " And this is even more true because the two processes, which then had different outcomes, have the eerie similarities.

Contrada even in the process we have reached a level almost mediumistic, because the phenomenon of pentitismo did not stop the words that are pronounced the repentant in court or by video conference, but was extended to make the dead speak. E 'was easy, even in the eyes of the reporters: I want to start by saying that I am a journalist, but I totally agree with what has been said before about my class. Unfortunately, the process Contrada was the victim of misinformation and total, let , absolutely shameful ... So, it was said, the dead speak ... When there was an objective finding in favor of the accused, who knows why this is not reflected it speaking, the press did not speak, but for some reason, however, the courts have not taken into account ... I want to give just two examples to understand what has been the leitmotif of this process: a turncoat that he changed his ... A repentant even said that, in the mid-'70s, Dr.. Bruno Contrada was made available to an apartment in Palermo by a manufacturer in the odor of the Mafia. Pity then that the data have shown that, at this time, the manufacturer had been denounced, arrested and jailed along with his five brothers on the head of the Palermo squad Bruno Contrada. Are actions that speak against the words of a repentant, but the ruling has been shown to disregard it ... And yet, one of the things that has made them suffer even more the accused, then convicted, and unjustly, I can say, from what I seen from the city even before a reporter, was put questioned his relationship with Boris Giuliano who was his brother, were Castor and Pollux, were those that the commissioner Migliorini called "my jewels" ... Well, Boris Giuliano died in 1979, murdered by the Mafia. He could not speak, therefore, could not testify, however, has been named in the process, along with Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, Ninni Cassara .... many people died who were not there to say "but what are you saying??" ... They were there, however, to say, stunned, "What are you doing??" dozens and dozens of colleagues, superiors and employees of Bruno Contrada ... which I have in defending. I have seen ... the evening of the conviction at first instance down the stairs of the Palace of Justice in Palermo with Bruno Contrada, his lawyers, his son Guy and his former employee ... I saw it I cry I saw this cry police inspector, and understand that people who have armed conflicts are emotionally very strong ... I've seen him cry and I heard him say one sentence: "Doctor Contrada, I'm going to get drunk because someone else shot ...". Think about what was the affection of these employees, not only of colleagues and superiors Bruno Contrada, but each of its employees ... What hearing, I saw a mo 'of the royal guard to be there, participate, even when they could not speak with the prisoner because he was still under the custody ... His ex-employees gave him that sense of comfort ... Well, I saw them cry ... And it was amazing, then, perceive the devotion that was against this man. Well, these, colleagues, employees were not believed. They were believed to be repented of that changed version, so today I have to read on other blogs on the Internet, I have yet to read "Bruno Contrada is the one who did flee Toto Riina. But this is something that even at case, sorry, was even almost put to one side, because that operation, which Bruno Contrada was allegedly an informer for the Mafia, was never organized. So: you think that in a period like 1981, with the mob raised his shot against the men of the institutions, Dr. Bruno Contrada, not only would not be a good cop but was not even a good spy, because it would not done nothing but waste time and risk, rising to very nice people and certainly harmless dummy information on transactions that were never there and that all police and police in Palermo have sworn in court that were never organized! Yet, despite this, sorry it was believed, even after a sudden change of release occurred after less than a month ...

I do not want to bore you with further details also special because we are as close to the time, I guess. I believe that this day should make everyone think that the story of Enzo Tortora, that struck me personally (I was 17 then and I was really upset), the story of Enzo Tortora is continuing in the figure of Bruno Contrada. It 'better than we would all remember. I do not know under what legal consequences or not I can explain, but if we do not have the courage to tell it like it is, I think it would be useless to spend of words. Thank you. "
